Beach Run Silent, Run Deep might well be called the holy grail of submarine novels. It may still be available new, but my copy is an ex-library copy, used of course, purchased through the mail. Mush Morton shot up boats carrying what he believed to be Japanese troops to safety after he sank their transport. Bledsoe uses Richardson's injury to assume command and set course for Pearl Harbor. Beach's taut and dramatic narrative, told with the intimacy of a confession, deals with two strong-headed men, Edward Richardson, the commander of the USS Walrus, and his executive officer, Jim Bledsoe. Richardson wants to move up to that fleet boat, and Bledsoe is eager to get his own boat.
Unlike many war novels, here is a story that deals with war from the perspective of command. Then, when an emergency situation arises, he makes wrong choices. Richardson sends everyone else below, staying on the bridge with the hatch closed, and passing helm orders that result in running down both Japanese lifeboats.
At Gable's insistence, the film has Richardson taken seriously ill before being relieved of command so Gable would not be perceived as playing a less than dominant character. It was a major best seller when it came out, ten years after World War II. The three of them are together when they learn of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Laura and Jim wed just before the Walrus departs New London. Soon after blowing up a cargo ship and then engaging Bungo Pete, they are attacked by aircraft that had been alerted to their presence and were waiting in ambush.
Most military fiction sanitizes this, in a one-sided manner more often than not. Over pages of exciting material from around the world.
